LotL-4: Fight Cast Scenario & Roles

This is the fourth post in a series about the Lady of the Lakes Renaissance Faire in Tavares, Florida. Find all the entries in the series using the LotL link.

Roles at the Lady of the Lakes Renaissance Faire break down into distinct groups with some overlap into the fight cast. Today we’ll take a look at the fight cast. For the second year, the fighters will play characters that eventually show up in Shakespeare’s plays.

Kevin Daniels suggested the scenario last year when the directors decided to have a young William Shakespeare as part of the noble group. The Rogue’s Theatre troupe and local fight cast members portray the people Shakespeare met in his early years and whose real life inspirations were included in the plays he later wrote. By bringing the characters to life as if they were real, the scenes allow interaction between characters that come from different plays and periods. For example, Macbeth can fight Romeo in “real” life though the two ended set in different pieces of the master’s works.

Kevin told me:

One of the great things about having the fight cast play the inspirations for Shakespeare’s characters is that it allows us to have great Shakespearean villains clashing with Shakespeare’s classic heroes. We also have a lot of fun with the characters; for example, Rosaline has been dumped by Romeo and now she is stalking him at the festival trying to win him back. Hamlet wont date Ophelia because she is too old so she [is] depressed and carries a bucket of water so she can threaten to drown herself in front of Hamlet to make him regret his decision, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg for us.

Mr. Daniels, who the LotL staff asked to play the role of Sir Francis Drake this year, will portray the only actual historical character. Here is the chess match cast list, with character name and the name of the play, for this year:

  • Sir Francis Drake: Kevin Daniels
  • Hamlet: James Anderson (Hamlet)
  • Iago: Ken Dockum (Othello)
  • Laertes: Mark Bell (Hamlet)
  • Macbeth: Adam Richardson (Macbeth)
  • Mercutio: Rob Burgess (Romeo & Juliet)
  • Ophelia: Amanda Bouldin (Hamlet)
  • Othello: Rick Garcia (Othello)
  • Petruchio: David Hendershot (The Taming of the Shrew)
  • Romeo: David Bobola (Romeo & Juliet)
  • Rosaline: Paige Crane (Romeo & Juliet)
  • Sebastian: Jed Vinson (Twelfth Night)
  • Tybalt: Lonnie Cox (Romeo & Juliet)
  • Viola / Cesario: Glenda Horne* (Twelfth Night)
  • Witches, the Wyrde sisters: Stephanie Daniels and Thelma Duff (Macbeth)

Stay tuned next week as we reveal other storylines and character portrayals.
