Renaissance Faire News - Sharing the Joy of Faire, one post at a time at FaireNews.com!!

The "Have You Met?" series introduces you to some of the people who make Faire a joy!

RESCU works and needs our help

I’ve told you before about RESCU, the Renaissance Entertainers, Services, Crafters United (RESCU) Foundation. The organization is dedicated to making sure there’s medical care available for all those who bring the joy of Faire to us. The final weekend of the Bay Area Renaissance Festival, I found out just how close to home their mission could be to me.

Salty, a vendor on the faire circuit

Salty’s a friend of mine who’s a merchant on the Faire circuit. I had noticed someone else was selling the specialized smelling salts this year but thought Salty had hired a manager. When I saw him for the first time on closing Sunday, I almost didn’t recognize him. Turns out that during the run at Georgia Renaissance Faire in 2009, he’d had to come home with a mysterious medical problem that was causing him to be disoriented. With quick help from his RESCU advocate, he was tested and diagnosed with cancer, got treatment, and says he is clear and doing exceptionally well. He expressed his amazement and gratitude that he’s still with us today and wanted everyone to know how wonderful RESCU was during his ordeal.

Now RESCU needs our help. As always, the need for funding is greater than the resources. GoodSearch.com is running a limited time special designed to raise up to $5,000, $1 at a time. For every GoodSearch toolbar for RESCU downloaded between between now and April 9th at 9am GoodSearch donates $1. Yea, I know, I’m not giving you much time but I just found out.

After you’ve got the GoodSearch toolbar, use it. Your searches and many of the purchases that you make from those searches will raise money for RESCU too. You can find all the information about how that works and see what’s been raised so far by checking out the GoodSearch RESCU page.

Last but certainly not least, I received word that for the first time ever, RESCU is looking for an Executive Director to assist the Board in ensuring " that the organization is fiscally and programmatically sound and strategically advancing its purpose and goals." Deadline for resume submissions is April 15th with a preferred start date of May 1, 2010. For all the details, I’m including a link to the job announcement (PDF) for the Executive Director‘s position.

Thank you so much for that, Esc–

Salty Jim is very dear to me–and you–and it was great to see how he looked so fantastic!
    God love him!

I don’t know if you’ve met her, Terri, but his daughter was out at Faire that day too. She didn’t stick right with him but I’d catch her watching him from time to time. I think it’s still sinking in that they almost lost him. It’s great to be able to share a success story.
