Renaissance Faire News - Sharing the Joy of Faire, one post at a time at FaireNews.com!!

The "Have You Met?" series introduces you to some of the people who make Faire a joy!

Getting to know you!

There’s a survey circulating amoung my friends on MySpace especially designed for those of us who frequent Renaissance, Medieval, Fantasy, Pirate, and Faerie Festivals and Faires.

Thought I’d share it here as a way to get to know my readers. I’m going to post the questions, then I’ll start it off by posting my answers as the first comment. I’d love to hear from you. And my thanks to my friend Tremayne for the thoroughly novel concept of just deleting the questions that didn’t make sense. Instead of deleting, though, I modified the wording on a few.

    6. We went to Wicked Faire in New Jersey in February
    7. I have 2 long chemises, 3 short chemises, two overskirts, one split skirt, one kilt, two cloaks, boots, flats, and barefeets. Lots to mix and match, still haven’t figured out all the combinations and I’m adding more all the time.
    8. I have a sweet little bodice dagger that surprises many people
    9. I’ve been flogged many times courtesy of The Flogger Brothers, thanks Gillius
    10. My first year at faire was 1991
    11. Nobody gets the blame for introducing me to Faire *grinning* I found Hoggetowne on a solo roadtrip

    18. As far as security goes, ask me in person for the story of the kilted lad
    19. I’ve tried faire-speak, but I’m really bad at it
    20. There’s always an ankle and knee brace in my basket
    21. Sunscreen is required for me, I’ll burn in about 20 minutes
    22. I have burgundy, white, and mustard chemises and my pyrate blouse is white

    25. Escarlata is kind of hard to explain, a fantasy creature who looks like a wench, born 1498 to a succubus and a Spanish Cardinal, raised in a convent, demon spawn who is known for creating mischief, mayhem, and debauchery. Debauchery = Excessive indulgence in pleasing the senses.

    33. I love our Queens at Tampa and Tennessee. They are both the best
    34. So far, our handfasting in Tennessee this past year
    35. Escarlata “won” time with Leinad and Sir Ironhead at the ‘Ette & ‘Teer auction to benefit RESCU Foundation during ‘Ette Tu, an invasion of the Tennessee Renaissance Festival over Memorial Day Weekend, 2007. Her theory was “If one was good, two must be better.”

Athena, It looks like you all had a great time at faire. I look forward to seeing you in Tennesse and seeing how all the new garb has turned out as you’ve turned your hand to sewing.

Molden, somehow Cap’t Howdy … *shaking her head* … just thinking about a crew trying to find you for the next set of orders … “Hey, anybody seen the Capt’n?” and everyone pointing in different directions say “Yea, he went that way!” *grinning* and then they’d find you giving nummies to a bar wench.

Hope neither of you mind me having added the highlight to indicate which one is you. See you both at the end of the month!

    24. Would you date someone at faire? Yes.
    25. Describe your character? No matter the garb, I’m always Lady Nicolette, although “Lady” is a mere honorific and doesn’t denote class in my case. I come from a musical family that has shadowy origins, probably actually Eastern European gypsies, but because of our musical talent, we are allowed in to the finest courts of the land. Because of our shifting status, I’m usually wearing cottons, although I may have lace or sometimes very fine jewelry despite the step up from mere wench’s garb. I can sometimes appear as a gypsy/dancer type as well, due to my background with Middle Eastern and gypsy music.

I’m merely a stage hand/tour manager of sorts for my “band of gypsies,” and also keep watch for the welfare of our horses and hounds as well as generally plan and prepare all of our meals. I will sometimes read the Tarot Cards for those who request it, but also never take money for the service. Although I am learning how to play the harp, I don’t perform publicly, being merely an apprentice. There is a sense about me of some private sadness in my distant past, perhaps a lost love, but no one knows for sure. I love repartee, badinage and bad puns but can also keep my own company easily.
    26. What is your favorite show at faire? Pitu Guli at the first faire. John Compton’s troupe at the Northern California Faires. Joseph Pusey always. Solomon Feldthouse always. Carol the Harper and Tony Selvage always. Owain Phyfe. Craig of Farrington. Empty Hats. Any combination of Flying Karamozov Brothers.
    27. Worked at faire? Yes.
    28. Do you prefer tent or hard sites? Hard.
    29. Do you share the pictures you take? I usually don’t take pictures. What are those funny things you hold up to your eyes? Some kind of devilry?
    30. Do you know all the words to at least one faire song? Many.
    31. Have you ever given or received a kilt check? No.
    32. Plan on doing any new characters? If yes, describe: No. Wasn’t I enough up above?
    33. Most memorable character at faire? Joseph Pusey. Hands down. Next comes Carol, the harper and Tony Selvage.
    34. Favorite moment at faire? When I looked across the lanes, saw the love of my life and time stopped.

    1. Tankard, Goblet, or Plastic Cup and with or without a cover? Tankard with my first costume, none for my second costume.
    2. Did you wear garb your first time at Faire? Partial, my friend loaned me a cloak, shirt, pants, and a short sword, but I didn’t have proper boots.
    3. What was the last thing you bought – other than food and drink? A new hat and brown leather strap, for my capitano hat.
    4. What does your favorite pin say? I only have one so far, so “Faire Magazine First 500”
    5. Do you go for historical accuracy in your garb? I don’t really go for historical accuracy, but I’ve been told my newer garb is more historically accurate.
    6. Where was your last out-of-state Faire? The New Hampshire Renaissance Faire.
    7. How many different costumes do you own? I have 2 full outfits so far, with the hope of building a pirate outfit by next season. I also few extra pieces that I’m slowly fitting into a fourth outfit.
    8. Do you carry a blade? Yes
    9. Have you been flogged? No
    10. When was your virgin year? 1994, although it wasn’t until last year (2007) that I fully got into attending faires in garb.
    11. Who originally introduced you to Faire? Several of my friends from during college. Last year, it was my brother, who had a medieval wedding, which is when I truly got hooked.
    12. Had your hair braided? No, I did get contacts just for faire season though.
    13. Had a henna tattoo? No.
    14. Do you have pockets? Yes, though I rarely use them because any weight at all tends to pull my pants down.
    15. Do you carry a cell phone where it can be seen? No, I always keep it in a pouch.
    16. Will you shed part of your costume if it’s hot? I will shed my cloak. Last June, when it reached nearly 100 degrees, I kept everything on, except the cloak, until I purchased something new, which forced me to remove my doublet. I never put it back on after that, even after removing the new pauldrons.
    17. What part of someone else’s costume do you wish you had? I’m always looking for new ideas. I often take pictures of other well dressed guests, so that I can get some great new ideas.
    18. Ever had a run-in with security? No
    19. Do you bother with Faire-speak? Usually for the first few hours, before getting tired, but I’m really bad at it.
    20. What do you carry on you, that most other people probably do not? The only things I carry with me other than my garb accouterments, are money, my ID, a credit card, my watch, and my cell phone. I keep them all in a pouch.
    21. Is sunscreen a normal part of your costume? Not usually, because I wear a hat. However, last June, I was forced to place some on my neck and left ear area, because my hat didn’t cover them as well as I had expected. I burn very easily, so I always wear a hat.
    22. What color is/are your blouse(s)/shirt(s)? Off-White, with burgundy embroidery and a burgundy strip down the arms (I have 2 of these shirts); I traditional Ruffle collared Renaissance shirt, also off-white, with ruffled cuffs; and a true white noble renaissance shirt, with pearl buttons and ruffled cuffs.

Well Met, Don, and welcome to FaireNews. I remember Shrewsbury well, I almost spent a long weekend there on Saturday afternoon in 2005. With the help of the Shire Reaves, we discovered that the keys can only be locked in a rental car if all the doors to the car are locked *chuckling* It was a wonderful afternoon and I refused to let a little thing like not having a clue how I would make the next leg of my journey stop me from enjoying it to the fullest.

Hi, I’m not here to answer any questions, but to give my view. I’ve ALWAYS LOVED to dress up and pretend I was in another time. I wasn’t very popular in my school and my “friends” never called or talked to me outside of school. Anyway, I was always made fun of because of the outfits I put together or my brother told people that I wasn’t completely full at the top(mentally) because I would always walk around in the woods and I would spend hours just sitting and looking around lol. I know that there are alot of mean people out there and they say alot of horrible things to people who don’t exactly fit their way of life. I just wanted to say that I admire everyone who basically said that they don’t care what people think or say! Oh nd sorry this is so long!!!

Hi, Brandy, and welcome to FaireNews. I love the dressing up aspect of Faires and Festivals. It’s so much fun to become who you want to be and not worry about what others are doing. Maybe one of these days … we’ll see you at Faire!!
