Medieval Portraiture and Baroque Busts at the Getty Center through October 26, 2008

California

In Los Angeles, the Getty Center is currently hosting two exhibits that have ties to the Renaissance and medieval periods we enjoy.

The first is an exploration of portraits from illuminated manuscripts of the Middle Ages (approx A.D. 500-1500). The “Faces of Power and Piety: Medieval Portraiture” exhibit includes an assortment of religious figures, notable persons of the times such as authors and artists, and the benefactors who made the portraiture possible. The exhibit explores the symbolism that is behind the small details in the portraits as well as the artistry that went into the creation of the illuminations.

The other exhibit, “Bernini and the Birth of Baroque Portrait Sculpture,” shares the work of Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Famous for his ability to coax a “speaking likeness” from marble, Bernini is frequently credited with inventing Baroque art. This exhibit brings together more than 50 works of art from public and private collections all over the world.

Both of these exhibits are interesting to me. Bernini’s busts remind me of the Living Statues that perform at some faires. Looking at the photographs of the illuminations provided some ideas about what I’ll be doing with some of my garb. These exhibitions continue through October 26th so, if you’re in the area, check them out.
